Located about 200 kilometers south of Lima, Peru, Chincha Alta is a city of over 160,000 people. It is an important agricultural community and the location where many black slaves brought from Africa in the 17th and 18th Centuries were put to work in cotton plantations. Today it is the center for Afro-Peruano music and dance. The Verano Negro celebrating black culture is a festival held in late February in Chicha Alta. But otherwise the city is not a big draw for tourism.
