Located just 35 kilometers (21 miles) north of the southern border of Peru, just north of Arica, Chile, Tacna is an important trade town with a population of 285,000.  It is in the Atacama Desert on the PanAmerican Highway.  August 25-30 is the Semana de Tacna ("Tacna Week"), the most important festival in Tacna.
