Confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers [edit]
The Mississippi and Ohio Rivers literally collide with each other at
the southern tip of Illinois ; just south of Cairo, IL. Both
rivers are approximately a mile wide where they meet. The muddy
Mississippi and the realitively clear Ohio do not simply run together;
a visible line of turbulance occurs where they collide. When one
river is higher than the other, this line of demarcation may actually
be a visible difference of several inches of level difference.
The waters of the two remain visible distinct from one another for a
number of miles downstream before they fully blend with each
other. The characteristics of this river "crossroads of the
nation" are unique in the United States.
